Surrender

Even though he'd vanished from her sight in the blink of an eye, she'd still apparently been even faster.  He could only assume she'd guessed his intentions – a last ditch attempt to protect the man who'd raised him – appearing in a red blur before him, her features still twisted in rage.

The two jounin they'd appeared between had looked even more surprised than he – his master and hers had still been in the midst of their own death match, the latter still charging towards the former to deliver the final blow.  However, before he could even utter a sound, the small girl raised an arm aglow in chakra, halting her teacher's lethal strike with a single, open palm.

"Wha…?!"

Her jounin-sensei's surprise seemed to mirror his master's.  He pulled back, cancelling out the electrified chakra collected in his hand instantly.  A quick glance at her still raised hand didn't yield so much as a single scratch.  "Naruto…"

She hissed at him, her expression still twisted in animalistic fury.  When the jounin took a wary step back, she turned her attention back to him, causing him to let out a short gasp.

Her eyes, blood red with slitted cat-like pupils – still bore that same deep sadness, that aching loneliness he'd noticed upon their first meeting.   Despite the pain of his injuries, he felt light, relieved… She was still there; the young blonde that he'd befriended, bonded with…

…and then betrayed…

"You…" she snarled, her voice rough and distorted.  Was it due to the red chakra still licking at her body like an open flame?  What had happened to her?  Was this why she was different?  He felt a stab of pain that he knew did not originate from the kunai wound she'd dealt him.

"Naru…"

Something flickered in her eyes at her name, only to be buried beneath a haze of rage.  "You forfeit your life to me…  You are mine to kill!"

He stilled, aware of Zabuza's eyes on him… or perhaps they were on the blonde who had unwittingly spared his life?

"Will you take your revenge now?" he asked her softly.  "For your fallen comrade?"

The Konoha jounin tensed, his thoughts no doubt going to the dark haired genin under his command.

The blonde stared at him with those chilling eyes, her clawed fingers flexing and clenching.  "Your life is mine…"

Resigned to his fate, he closed his eyes in preparation for the final blow.  Zabuza tensed behind him, letting out a grunt of pain as a result of his many injuries.  He thought briefly about apologizing for failing him, for being unable to fulfill his duty as a tool for his goals… but before he could open his mouth, arms latched around his middle, a small body pressing against his.  He opened his eyes once more, blinking in surprise at the sight of the small blonde pressed against him, her body shaking.   A shudder tore through her as she let out a loud sob, clutching desperately at the folds of his kimono.

He'd thought his heart had been broken at the sight of his mother lying dead at his father's feet, but he'd been mistaken.  The sound she made had the useless organ shattering in his chest all over again.

'Naru… sumane…'

"Your life is mine now…" she murmured, her voice muffled by fabric and tears.  "I won't let anyone take it away…" Then she lifted her head, gazing at him with teary, steel blue eyes.  "I don't want any more of my precious people to die…!"

He froze, staring at her in awe.  She considered him precious?  After everything he'd done to her…?

"You…" he paused, the pain of his injuries melting away as he slowly raised his arms to encircle her.  He gazed down at her with wide eyes, curious at the emotions welling up inside of him.   He'd never felt like this before, never in all his years at Zabuza's side.  "You would have me…?"

"You are mine…" she said again.  "I won't ever let you go."

Perhaps it was due to his injuries, or perhaps it was something about the girl herself, but lethargy soon began to set in, drawing him into unconsciousness.   He knew that this Leaf ninja should still be treated as an enemy - she was a threat to their mission, after all - but he was content to stay exactly where he was.  He had forfeit life to her; she could do with it what she chose.

So long as she wanted him, he would stay by her side…

As he slipped under, a smile drifted across his face.  "Aa…"

End
So I got to wondering what it would be like if Haku had survived the fight in Chapter 6a [link] but it kinda came out more like [link]

I dunno... although I feel as though the Muse may be up to something...

EDIT 4/26/12 - Corrected some typos. I really ought to spell check more before posting... ^^;
